THE MANTLE

The Cornish Rex lacks the guard hairs, so what is seen is the undercoat, which is not
that shorter than usual but has a thinner consistency and is curled. This last particular characteristic is evident on the back and hips.

The relative absence of hair doe does not mean that these cats suffer more from the cold compared to others.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE CORNISH REX?

In 1950 a strange kitten with a curled coat appeared in the litter of a farm cat in Cornwall, South West England. The breeder said the mutation was similar to the Rex variety noted in some rabbits, and he began to breed it.

The Burmese and the British Shorthair were used for crossings in the early stages. Instead, in North America, where the breed was imported in 1957, the breeders preferred the Siamese and the Oriental cats for their selections.

The experiment created a lasting difference, reflected in the different breed standards between the two sides of the Atlantic.

The American Cornish Rex has a more Oriental-like appearance, as you may notice from the more squared head shape, compared to the specimens found in Great Britain.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE CORNISH REX CAT?

This breed has Anglo-Saxon roots and descended from a kitten born in Cornwall in 1950, which featured a characteristic curly coat due to a spontaneous mutation. A fascinating peculiarity that certainly could not leave indifferent the English breeders who immediately began a selective program to create a new breed.

In the selection, common cats and Siamese, British Shorthair, and Oriental short-haired cats were used. To date, there are two varieties of this breed developed: the European and the American.

The substantial difference, that distinguishes one variety from the other, mainly concerns
the physical constitution and the form of the head. The American specimens have a more petite, lighter build; the European ones are known, however, for the tapered legs, the long nose, and the straight profile.

Among the evaluation criteria, it counts more the hair quality, which must be silky rather than color.
