WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE DEVON REX?

The origins of this breed date back to a stray tom with a strange curled coat, who in 1960 mated with a cat from the village of Buckfastleigh in Devon. All attempts to capture the adult male failed, but his son, Kirlee, managed to pass on his particular genes.

Sometimes, The Devon Rex is also called a pixie cat or “elf cat” to emphasize his playful nature. However, sometimes it behaves more like a dog than a cat and is incredibly responsive to the training.

Some young Devon Rex cats can be taught to sit and walk on their hind legs and bring back objects. Furthermore, they soon learn to return when called.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE DEVON REX CAT?

The Devon Rex is descended from a spontaneous mutation action present in a kitten
born in 1960 in Cornwall, in Devon county.

Kirlee, this was her name, was a far from common black kitten: the triangular snout did resemble a goblin, the big ears seemed to be those of an elf, and the curled coat was soft like that of a little lamb.

Due to this cat’s peculiarity, his owner immediately understood the importance of that birth, and she agreed to sell the beloved kitten to some breeders who would make it the progenitor of a new breed.

Thinking it was the same mutation (of the Cornish Rex), these breeders tried to cross him with some Cornish Rex female. But, despite many attempts, not even a kitten was born with the same curly hair as that first selection.

For these reasons, the breeder began to think that the responsible gene was recessive, which means that the same gene has to be present in both parents.

This theory was confirmed when Kirlee was paired with one of the females born from the previous attempts, and, finally, a curly-haired kitten was born. Devon Rex obtained official recognition in 1967 by the GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy).

Ears must be cleaned regularly due to the abundant production of earwax. A cotton swab dipped in lukewarm chamomile will be acceptable for this operation.
