The facial features of the Exotic Shorthair, like the flat muzzle and hub nose, result from the Persian lineage. He has short and powerful legs with wide and round feet. The tail is short but proportionate.

THE MANTLE

The soft texture of the Exotic’s coat reveals its lineage from the Persians, while the thick and plush nature is due to the British.

The coat has a greater overall length than a traditional shorthaired cat, yet not as extended as to sway as that of a long-haired cat. Now the Exotic cats are reproduced in wide varieties, not just solid but also tabby, smoke, and two-tone.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE EXOTIC SHORTHAIR CAT?

The initial purpose of the crossing was to increase the size of the British Shorthair. Still, in terms of physical appearance, or “type,” many of the results were not considered suitable for appearing at exhibitions under the category British.

The shape of the muzzle was too similar to that of the Persian, and often the coat was too long or of a different consistency from that of the British. However, no one could deny its charm, especially the future owners who did not feel fit to care for a demanding coat like that of the Persian.

Since then, these cats have built themselves a large following, first in North America and now worldwide, thanks to their appearance, good temperament, and love for the house.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE EXOTIC SHORTHAIRED CAT?

The Exotic Shorthair is born from a hybridization created by man to get a cat similar to the Persian by character and appearance, but with a shorthair coat (which is easier to manage).

The breed selection occurred in America, starting from the 60s of the last century, pairing a shorthaired American with a Persian; second-generation kittens were then made to cross again with the main breed to stabilize the desired characteristics.

This new feline lineage got the name Exotic Shorthair. After thirty years of selective programs, these cats finally began presenting all the peculiarities of the Persian, endowed with a shorthaired coat.

Given the great success in the home county, the Exotic was presented even at European exhibitions at the beginning of the 1980s, and the breed obtained official recognition from FIFE in 1984.

Currently, the Exotic Shorthair breed standards are fixed, but the crosses with the Persian are still allowed to develop the hair’s morphology and texture.

The Exotic Shorthair features a wide range of coat colors and designs. If it’s well cared for and the feeding is correct, the hair is soft and fluffy.

Quiet and sweet, but vain like many purebred cats, the Exotic is one of the more friendly felines. However, his temperament is strong, and he does not hesitate to get his nails out if anyone dares to disturb his tranquility.

It coexists well with other animals and is perfect as a playmate for children and the elderly.

The Exotic Shorthair is more active than the Persian. But, compared to his long-haired cousin, he is more affectionate. He loves the comforts of life in the apartment, but away from home, he turns out not to be very confident.

He has a mild nature, but it does not mean that he is willing to be bullied.

TENDER AS A PUPPET

Because of the soft fur and the cute little face, the Exotic is particularly popular with children.

For this reason, toy manufacturers often take inspiration from the features of this breed to make soft plush.

HOW TO CARE FOR AND FEED THE EXOTIC SHORTHAIR CAT

Due to their particular conformation, the eyes should be cleaned daily, and the coat must be brushed twice a week during the year and every day during the moulting period.

AN ADVICEIt is a good rule not to feed only packaged food to the Exotic cat but alternate it often with fresh food.

Regarding the diet, there are no particular rules to be observed as long as dry and wet food is of excellent quality.

The eyes of the Exotic cat are bright and slightly protruding.

AN ADVICE
Due to the large head and massive structure, the females and the Exotic kittens risk facing severe complications during childbirth. Therefore, the presence of a veterinarian is essential.
